CAUTION NEOMORALE. DEF: The "caution néomorale" (≈ neomoral "token") refers to a person or group of people used, through their ostracism, as a means of pressure, blackmail, or threat. These individuals are taken as counterexamples, serving to reinforce behavioral norms - while guaranteeing their disciplinary value - within a group that monitors and adjusts its actions to remain within the boundaries of what is deemed socially acceptable. The term "caution néomorale" critiques new disciplinary practices by questioning bourgeois and carceral regulations that stigmatise and establish the margins as "sinful". It asserts the necessity to of transgressing and subverting these imposed norms, calling for the transfiguration of this cautionary role. A person becomes a caution néomorale in relation to those who uphold a neomoral order: these guardians of (neo)moralism use the caution as a regulatory vector of their discipline, as it refuses to affirm their unacknowledged norms. By recognising its imposed role and designating itself as the caution of their implicit norms, the caution néomorale can liberate itself from this hold by refusing to shoulder this responsibility, a premise towards the affirmation of its autonomous power.
